
Francisca Kusi-Appiah
Managing Senior Legal Consultant
Francisca Kusi-Appiah is the founder and the current managing senior legal consultant at K-App Law. She has amassed years of rich experience having worked at Minkah Premo & Co (Akosombo Chambers) in Accra, Ghana and the Daniels Legal Group in Houston, Texas, USA. Her areas of expertise include the drafting of contracts, energy regulation, governance of natural resources and competition law. She is an energy regulation expert for the Energy Regulators Association of East Africa (EREA) and an editorial advisory board member for the Commonwealth Law Bulletin.
Currently, she is the acting Head of the Department for Public Law for the Law School of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and a member of the Academic Board. Courses she has lectured include Petroleum Law, Energy Law, Law of Natural Resources, Law of Contract, Law of Tort, Criminal Law, Legal Research for Lawyers, Private International Law, and Competition and Consumer Protection Law. Her research interests extend from her areas of expertise into arbitration, environmental law, consumer protection, law and economics as well as sustainable development.
She holds a PhD from the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee, Scotland, UK. As a PhD candidate, she received a research award from the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA), after a panel of international energy experts evaluated a portion of her PhD thesis. She obtained her master’s degree with a specialization in Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Law in 2011 from the University of Houston, Texas and received the Dean’s award for being the best student for Introduction to American Law.
She was called to the bar in 2009 and was adjudged the best student for criminal procedure during her call to the Bar. She obtained her LLB from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2007. In 2016, her alma mater, KNUST, bestowed on her the Faculty of Law Excellence Award. She is certified in International Commercial Arbitration and Quantitative Risk Management (CQRM). She is a member of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN, formerly AIPN), the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and the Energy Institute (EI).
